Overview
Continental ARS 408-21 77 GHz Long-Range Radar for Object Detection and Collision Avoidance
The Continental ARS 408-21 is a compact 77 GHz long-range radar sensor designed for reliable distance and relative velocity measurement, object detection, and collision avoidance. Based on Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology, the sensor measures the distance and velocity of natural, non-reflector targets in a single measurement cycle. It also provides angular information to support object detection and environmental awareness in industrial and vehicle-related applications. The ARS 408-21 supports long-range measurements up to 250 m, with additional near-range coverage across wider azimuth angles. Its real-time scanning capability and digital beamforming architecture enable the detection and classification of objects in challenging environments. Typical applications include collision avoidance for vehicles and autonomous systems, long-range headway control, hazardous-area monitoring, object classification, and detection in areas with limited visibility. The sensor features a rugged housing, self-monitoring functionality, and a high-speed CAN interface operating at 500 kbit/s. With configurable identification settings and collision avoidance regions, the ARS 408-21 can be adapted to specific application requirements. Its compact dimensions, broad operating temperature range, and resistance to dust, water exposure, and high-pressure cleaning make it suitable for demanding industrial environments and mobile machinery applications.
